Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated the first phase of the ‘Shabd Sangrahalaya’ (Museum of Words) at the National Library in Kolkata, describing it as a major initiative to preserve and promote India’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage through modern technology.
The newly launched project features 22 scheduled Indian languages along with five modern digital galleries, creating a comprehensive platform to document, preserve and showcase India’s diverse linguistic traditions. The initiative aims to make India’s knowledge systems, literature and cultural heritage more accessible to future generations while also serving as a valuable resource for researchers, linguists, educators and students.
Sharing the development on social media, Amit Shah wrote, “মোদিজির নেতৃত্বে দেশজুড়ে সাংস্কৃতিক পুনর্জাগরণের সংকল্পকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়া হচ্ছে। আজ কলকাতার ন্যাশনাল লাইব্রেরিতে ‘শব্দ সংগ্রহশালা’-এর প্রথম পর্যায়ের উদ্বোধন করা হলো। ভারতের ২২টি ভাষা, বিভিন্ন উপভাষা এবং ৫টি অত্যাধুনিক ডিজিটাল গ্যালারি নিয়ে গড়ে ওঠা এই সংগ্রহশালা ভাষা, সংস্কৃতি ও ভারতের জ্ঞান-পরম্পরাকে আগামী প্রজন্মের কাছে পৌঁছে দেওয়ার এক শক্তিশালী মাধ্যম হয়ে উঠবে।”
The project forms part of the Centre’s broader efforts to digitally preserve India’s linguistic diversity and cultural legacy. Officials believe the museum will emerge as an important knowledge repository, encouraging academic research while promoting awareness of India’s multilingual identity through advanced digital technologies.
