The Uttarakhand government has directed all government-run schools in the state to introduce the recitation of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita shlokas during morning assemblies, according to an official order issued on July 14. The instruction was issued by the Uttarakhand Education Department and signed by Director of Secondary Education Mukul Kumar Sati.
Under the directive, schools are required to recite one Gita shloka daily and explain its meaning and relevance to students. Teachers have also been asked to choose a “Shloka of the Week,” display it on notice boards along with its explanation, and encourage students to reflect on its message. Weekly discussions and student feedback are to be incorporated into classroom activities.
The order states that the teachings should be approached from a secular perspective, interpreting them through psychology, logic, behavioural science and moral philosophy. The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which promotes integrating India’s traditional knowledge systems into contemporary education.
CM Dhami welcomed the move, calling the Gita a timeless source of knowledge. Former CM Harish Rawat supported the initiative but stressed the need for inclusivity, while Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana raised concerns over potential political messaging.
