On Thursday, Swiggy unveiled “Swiggy Serves”, its flagship initiative to combat hunger and reduce food waste throughout its value chain. It has teamed up with the volunteer-run Robin Hood Army (RHA) to repurpose excess food from Swiggy’s restaurant partners and deliver it to underprivileged areas as part of this effort.
According to a statement from the firm, the company and RHA want to provide 50 million meals by 2030 by using technology to reinvent food redistribution.
CEO of Swiggy Food Marketplace, Rohit Kapoor stated, “With ‘Swiggy Serves,’ we are leveraging our strengths and privilege to address a larger societal need and tackle the issues of food wastage and hunger. We are excited to partner with RHA to redistribute surplus food from our restaurant partners to those in need.”
More than 126 restaurant partners have joined Swiggy Serves’ pilot program, which has redistributed over 2,000 meals in 33 Indian cities. These partners include Biryani by the Kilo, Charcoal Eats – Biryani & Beyond, Dabba Garam, House of Biryani, B.Tech Momos Wala, Samosa Singh, Babai Tiffins, Dosa Anna, and Urban Tandoor.
By completing a form on the Swiggy Owner app, restaurant partners can sign up for Swiggy Serves and express their desire to contribute extra or fresh food, the business claims. Following onboarding, RHA will create specific WhatsApp groups for these restaurant partners to facilitate coordination and communication.
Thousands of young professionals, retirees, housewives, and college students will be among the RHA volunteers who will collect excess food from these partners and make sure it is delivered to underserved neighborhoods. RHA has provided more than 153 million meals in 406 cities worldwide in the past ten years.
Co-founder of Robin Hood Army, Neel Ghose said, “Robin Hood Army is thrilled to come together with Swiggy for this shared mission of reducing hunger. When an industry leader like Swiggy collaborates with a community-driven movement, it amplifies the impact, inspiring others to join the fight against hunger. Together, we’re creating a stronger, united front to ensure no plate goes empty.”
