By adding search engine capabilities to its ChatGPT AI chatbot, OpenAI positioned itself as a rival to Google’s established dominance in web search. Based on the SearchGPT prototype, this most recent version is powered by the GPT-4 model. Open AI CEO Sam Altman urged users to try the updated ChatGPT Plus with the new Chrome extension for the best experience and outcomes in a post on X.
Regarding the update, the company stated in its blog post, “ChatGPT can now search the web in a much better way than before. You can get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, which you would have previously needed to go to a search engine for. This blends the benefits of a natural language interface with the value of up-to-date sports scores, news, stock quotes, and more. ChatGPT will choose to search the web based on what you ask, or you can manually choose to search by clicking the web search icon.”
In order to bring current data and fresh graphic styles for areas like weather, equities, sports, news, and maps, the company has also teamed up with news and data suppliers. ChatGPT search uses both content from its partners and third-party search engines to deliver the information.
To provide users with prominent results, OpenAI observed that ChatGPT Search “dissociated search queries” with outside search engines like Bing. Additionally, ChatGPT provides third-party search providers with users’ IP addresses in order to increase the precision of search results.
Additionally, according to OpenAI, ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers will be the first to have access to the ChatGPT Search tool. Enterprise and educational clients will be able to use it in the “coming weeks.” Access will be available to free trial users in the upcoming months. The feature will be available on the desktop, mobile, and online versions of the ChatGPT app.
