Zomato announced on Friday (October 11) that its independent director Gunjan Soni has decided to step down due to “increased work commitments.”
In an announcement to the BSE, it was revealed that Soni will also cease her involvement with Zomato’s risk management committee and its corporate social responsibility committee.
Gunjan Soni holds the position of CEO for the Southeast Asia-focused ecommerce platform Zalora.
“The need to step down stems from increased professional commitments and was a tough decision. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served on the board and am confident in Zomato’s management team and the company’s future direction,” Soni expressed in her resignation statement.
She further mentioned that there were no significant reasons for her departure, other than the reasons detailed in her resignation letter.
In response to Soni’s resignation, Zomato’s cofounder and chief executive, Deepinder Goyal, stated, “It was great to partner with Gunjan and a big thanks to her for helping us navigate through the ups and downs of the past few years. On behalf of Zomato, I want to thank Gunjan for her valuable insights and guidance that have been instrumental in our growth.”
An alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur, Soni previously led Jabong (which was acquired by Myntra), and had experience working with entities like Star India and McKinsey & Company.
This news comes as Zomato is undergoing major changes. Just a few weeks after its cofounder and chief people officer (CPO), Akriti Chopra, announced her departure for “pursue other interests.” Additionally, Zomato has brought on board Kunal Khambhati, former head of BookMyShow’s live events and intellectual property, to strengthen its ‘going-out’ sector.
Zomato’s stock reached a record high of Rs 298.05 during the trading session on September 23, pushed by better-than-expected financial performance, increased profits, and strong momentum in Blinklit.
In Q1 FY25, Zomato reported a net profit of Rs 253 crore, up from Rs 2 crore in the same period of the previous fiscal year. Meanwhile, its operating revenue surged 74% to Rs 4,206 crore compared to Rs 2,416 crore in the previous quarter.
