The Government of Tamil Nadu has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Google to establish ‘Tamil Nadu AI Labs’ in Chennai.
Taking to X, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, TRB Rajaa, announced, “During our visit to Google Headquarters today, we signed an MoU to set up ‘#TamilNaduAILabs’ at Guidance_TN in Chennai, in partnership with Google!”
The Minister further elaborated that the collaboration aims to train 2 million young individuals in AI through the Naan Mudhalvan program, form partnerships with startups, and support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the rural economy.
This announcement follows the visit of Chief Minister M K Stalin to the United States.
Rajaa also highlighted that the government has signed six MoUs across various sectors, attracting investments of Rs 900 crore and generating over 4,000 high-quality jobs for the state.
These investments consist Nokia’s Research and Development Center in Siruseri, PayPal’s expansion of its AI-ML-focused development center in Chennai, semiconductor innovations led by Microchip and Yield Engineering Systems in Coimbatore, an advanced AI technology development center by Applied Materials, and Infinx’s technology center in Madurai.
Rajaa concluded in the post, “With #CMStalinInUS, Tamil Nadu is racing into a new era of tech #RnD, #semiconductors design, and #AI!”
This development highlights the growing interest of major technology companies in India to invest in the country, particularly in light of the post-pandemic surge in digitalization.
Earlier this month, Google initiated the manufacturing process of its Pixel 8 smartphone in India. The company’s executives are optimistic about India’s potential in the premium smartphone market.
Google has signed multiple deals for leasing space at the colocation data centres of Noida and Navi Mumbai. Moreover, the tech major has reportedly been in advanced discussions to buy a 22.5-acre plot in Navi Mumbai’s Juinagar for the construction of the company’s first-ever captive data center in India, valued at Rs 850 crore.
