Krutrim, the AI startup launched by Ola Cabs‘ co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal in December 2023, announced plans to design, build, and release its first AI chip by 2026.
The company is developing three distinct families of chips: “Bodhi” for AI, “Sarv” for general compute, and “Ojas” for edge computing. Additionally, Krutrim has outlined plans to launch Bodhi-II in 2028.
To support this initiative, Krutrim has entered into strategic partnerships with global chipmakers Arm and Untether AI.
During the announcement at Ola Sankalp 2024, Aggarwal emphasized that India has a significant opportunity to become a global leader in emerging technologies like AI, attributing the country’s advantage to its vast data resources and large tech talent pool.
Krutrim also revealed its ambitious plans to scale its data center capacity to 1 GW by 2028, up from the current 20 MW. Earlier this year, Aggarwal transitioned Ola’s workloads from Microsoft Azure to Krutrim’s proprietary cloud infrastructure, marking a critical shift towards self-reliance in tech infrastructure.
According to Aggarwal, more than 50 new services have already been launched on Krutrim AI, making it ready to meet the needs of Indian developers across various applications. Krutrim Cloud will expand its offerings to cover a wide array of services, including infrastructure, developer platforms, data management, AI models, and AI applications.
Aggarwal shared that Ola Electric and Ola Cabs have already integrated Krutrim AI into their operations. He further reported that Krutrim has gained traction among Indian developers, with over 25,000 developers using the Krutrim Cloud and more than 10 million users engaging with the Krutrim chat app. Since its launch in early 2024, Krutrim has recorded 250 billion API calls across its products and generated over 1 trillion tokens in the last six months.
In a significant move to foster wider adoption, Krutrim announced that cloud services worth Rs 100 crore will be available for free until Diwali 2024. “Our ambition with Krutrim is to democratize technology for every Indian, beyond just mobility,” Aggarwal stated.
At the same event, Ola Cabs relaunched its popular Ola Share feature in Bengaluru, with plans to extend it to other cities. In addition, the company introduced Ola Coins, a loyalty program that will apply across various Ola services.
Addressing the growing demand for quick commerce, Aggarwal highlighted the importance of automation in achieving scale and announced the launch of an automated warehouse, which will be made available to brands on the ONDC platform.
