Foxconn Eyeing to Assemble Apple iPads in India

Apple’s supplier Foxconn is eyeing to expand its manufacturing operations in India by assembling the former’s flagship tablet iPads at its facility located in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

Foxconn India only assembled Apple’s phones with global contract manufacturers. It plans to double its iPhone and iPad manufacturing capability and discussions with the government are already underway.

Manufacturing of Mac laptops is not to be expected anytime soon on account of the small production volume.

Notably, Foxconn has plans to invest Rs 13,911 crore in Karnataka. The move aligns with the Taiwanese contract manufacturer’s gradual switch from China due to COVID-19 along with geopolitical reasons. Apple had shifted a significant portion of iPad manufacturing from China to Vietnam in 2023.

Foxconn has also announced a partnership with IT giant HCL Group to pilot a chip packaging and testing facility in India though the proposal is yet to receive the government’s nod. It is estimated that the annual iPad shipment will touch 49 million in 2024, growing 4.5% on a YoY-basis.

Wistron, Kaynes Technology, and Tata Electronics are some other electronic companies that have expanded their operations in India recently.
