In a strategic move to align with regional market dynamics, venture capital firm Matrix Partners has rebranded its Indian and Chinese arms. The Indian division is now known as Z47, while the Chinese operations have been renamed MPC. The US operations will continue under the Matrix name, with headquarters in Boston and San Francisco.
The rebranding reflects a shared commitment to clarity in the marketplace and responsiveness to local market needs. “The decision to rename is driven by a shared commitment to clarity in the marketplace, responsiveness to regional market dynamics, and a continued focus on competing locally, which will benefit each organization’s respective portfolio companies, investors, and partners,” said Matrix in a statement.
The new name Z47 is inspired by India’s ambitious goal to become a developed nation by 2047. This rebranding follows the firm’s significant fundraising efforts, including a $450 million fund launched in May 2023, later increased to $525 million. Over the past year, the fund has invested in over a dozen startups, including Neysa, InPrime, Krutrim SI Designs, Aampe, Atomic Work, Wootz.work, Stable Money, Grey Labs AI, and Scapia.
This rebranding trend is not unique to Matrix Partners. In June 2023, Sequoia Capital split into three separate firms to focus on the US and Europe, China, and India and Southeast Asia, rebranding its India and Southeast Asia arm as Peak XV Partners. Similarly, the early-stage accelerator fund 9Unicorns rebranded as 100Unicorns last month.
The rebranding initiatives highlight a broader trend among venture capital firms to adapt to regional market needs and enhance their local presence.
