How a WhatsApp Group Turned into a $200 Million Company: The Dunzo Story

Imagine moving to a bustling city, expecting a whirlwind of excitement, only to find yourself unfulfilled and yearning for more. Now, picture transforming that sense of boredom into a groundbreaking venture that redefines urban living for millions. This is the story of how one man’s innovative spirit and relentless drive turned a simple WhatsApp group into a multi-million-dollar enterprise.

Kabir Biswas, along with Ankur Aggarwal, Dalvir Suri, and Mukund Jha, founded Dunzo in July 2014 in Bangalore. What started as a small WhatsApp group to take and deliver orders grew into a hyperlocal, on-demand delivery platform serving nine major Indian cities.

Kabir Biswas believed that moving to Bengaluru would bring excitement and new opportunities. However, within six months, he found himself bored and uninspired. Determined to turn things around, he transformed his small room in a duplex into a hub of innovation.

Gathering a few friends, Kabir tested a novel business idea: self-completing to-do-list products. Customers could send a message to his WhatsApp number, and Kabir personally completed the deliveries on his bike for several months. This hands-on approach and dedication laid the foundation for what would soon become a revolutionary business.

Driven by the mission to become “the logistics layer of every city,” Kabir founded Dunzo. At 28, with a background in engineering from Mumbai University and a Master’s degree from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai, he left his job to launch this time-saving venture. Initially, he recruited a few part-time employees from an NGO and developed a business model that served both businesses (B2B) and consumers (B2C).

The startup quickly gained traction, completing 70 deliveries in just one day in June 2015. Within the next three months, Dunzo received its first major investment.

In 2016, Dunzo transitioned from a WhatsApp-based service to an app, expanding its reach to major metro cities like Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai. Despite facing competition from brands like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy, Dunzo continued to grow.

Dunzo now boasts significant investments from Google and Reliance Retail, with a total funding of $449M. Its latest funding stage is Series F, with an amount raised at $75M by convertible note as of April 6, 2023. The current valuation of Dunzo is $744M as of April 14, 2023.

Kabir’s journey from a bored professional in Bengaluru to the founder of a $744M company highlights his innovative spirit and dedication to solving logistical challenges in urban areas.

As of 2024, Dunzo’s valuation has significantly dropped to around $200 million. This decrease comes after a series of financial challenges and restructuring efforts, which have drastically reduced its value from a peak of nearly $800 million. The company is currently seeking to raise $35 million through a rights issue to stabilize its operations and address financial difficulties.
