Indian space tech startup Agnikul Cosmos has announced the successful completion of the maiden test flight of its homegrown rocket, Agnibaan SOrTeD. The launch, conducted from the company’s private launchpad at Sriharikota’s SDSC-SHAR facility, marks a significant milestone for the startup.
According to Agnikul Cosmos, all mission objectives for the controlled vertical ascent flight were met, with nominal performance observed. Notably, the rocket was entirely designed in-house and powered by the world’s first single-piece 3D-printed engine, marking India’s first flight with a semi-cryogenic engine.
Earlier attempts to launch Agnibaan faced delays due to unavoidable circumstances, but the successful test flight validates the startup‘s capabilities in the space tech domain.
The two-stage launch vehicle, Agnibaan SOrTeD (SubOrbital Technological Demonstrator), boasts impressive specifications. With the capacity to carry payloads of up to 300 kg into orbit at an altitude of about 700 km, the rocket features a plug-and-play engine configuration. It measures 18 meters in length with a diameter of 1.3 meters and has a lift-off mass of 14,000 kgs.
Founded in 2017 by Srinath Ravichandran, Moin SPM, and SR Chakravarthy, Agnikul Cosmos aims to revolutionize the small satellite launch industry. The startup’s innovative approach has garnered attention, leading to partnerships with organizations like ISRO and significant funding rounds, including a recent INR 200 crore Series B round.
Despite facing losses, Agnikul Cosmos remains committed to advancing its technology and expanding its market presence, reflecting the growing potential of India’s space tech sector.
