Google is poised to initiate the production of its Pixel smartphones in Tamil Nadu through a partnership with Taiwan’s Foxconn. This strategic move, reported by Reuters on Thursday, signifies Google’s endeavor to diversify its manufacturing base beyond China amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The sources revealed that Google will manufacture its latest smartphone models at Foxconn’s existing facility in Tamil Nadu, leveraging the company’s expertise as a key assembler of Apple‘s iPhones near Chennai. This collaboration underscores the broader trend of major global manufacturers seeking alternative supply chain solutions amid geopolitical uncertainties.
While there has been no official comment from Google, Foxconn, or the Tamil Nadu government on the matter, the decision reportedly follows recent meetings between state officials and Google executives.
This development comes at a time when Apple is intensifying its local production efforts in India, as reported by Bloomberg. The tech giant has significantly increased the assembly of iPhones in the country, with devices worth $14 billion produced in FY24 alone. Presently, India contributes approximately 14% of Apple’s global iPhone production.
