Ninjacart, the Indian agritech start-up that has revolutionized the agricultural supply chain, is now setting its sights on cementing a lasting legacy. Since its inception, Ninjacart has been at the forefront of transforming how farm produce reaches urban markets, making agritech an attractive and viable industry.
Founded in 2015 by Thirukumaran Nagarajan, Sharath Loganathan, and Ashutosh Vikram, Ninjacart began with a mission to tackle inefficiencies in the agricultural supply chain. The start-up employs technology to streamline the movement of fresh produce from farmers to retailers, eliminating middlemen and reducing food wastage. Their innovative approach has not only provided better prices for farmers but also ensured fresh produce for consumers at competitive rates.
Thirukumaran Nagarajan, an engineer hailing from Tamil Nadu, embarked on a challenging entrepreneurial journey. Initially, Thiru tried his hand at the food business by starting a biryani center, which unfortunately did not succeed. Left with just Rs 500, he moved to Bangalore, searching for new opportunities.
In Bangalore, Thiru found employment at a taxi company, which was eventually acquired by Ola. This acquisition left him unemployed once again. Undeterred by these setbacks, Thiru decided to look beyond traditional employment and, along with his friends, envisioned an agritech startup.
Thiru’s idea was simple yet revolutionary: create an app to connect local kirana stores with customers, facilitating the direct sale of groceries in a hyperlocal format. Initially, this model focused on discounting items to attract customers.
However, Thiru soon realized that merely discounting wasn’t enough to sustain the business or add real value. This realization led to the birth of Ninjacart in December 2015.
Ninjacart quickly gained traction by sourcing fresh produce directly from farmers. By March 2016, the company was delivering 15 tons of produce daily to local retailers and had raised Rs 20 crore from Accel.
This direct sourcing approach significantly reduced food wastage to 3.8%, compared to the typical 30% in traditional supply chains.
The rapid growth continued, and by April 2017, Ninjacart expanded its operations to Hyderabad and Chennai. With a new round of funding amounting to Rs 37 crore, Ninjacart connected 100 farmers with over 500 retailers.
By the end of 2018, Ninjacart had significantly scaled its operations, serving 4,000 retailers and transacting 1400 tons of produce daily. This growth attracted Rs 221 crore in funding from Syngenta Ventures, allowing the company to expand to seven cities.
In April 2019, Ninjacart secured a substantial investment of Rs 699 crore from Tiger Global. The company’s success story reached a new pinnacle in December 2021, when it raised Rs 1095 crore from Walmart and Flipkart, valuing the company at Rs 6000 crore.
Today, Ninjacart stands as a beacon of innovation and resilience in the agritech sector. The company works with 800,000 farmers and 100,000 retailers across 120 locations in India, facilitating efficient and profitable agricultural practices. Ninjacart’s valuation has soared to Rs 6700 crore, showcasing the remarkable journey from a small startup to an agritech giant.
Ninjacart has witnessed exponential growth over the years. As of the latest financial year (FY 2023-24), the company reported a 40% year-on-year increase in revenue, reaching ₹1,500 crore. They now operate in over 100 cities across India, connecting more than 200,000 farmers with over 80,000 retailers.
This growth has been bolstered by significant investments, with total funding amounting to $350 million. Major investors include Tiger Global, Accel, and Flipkart, with the latest funding round in 2023 valuing the company at approximately $1.2 billion.
Thirukumaran Nagarajan’s story is a testament to perseverance and visionary thinking. From sleeping in vegetable markets to leading a multibillion-dollar company, Thiru’s journey is an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere.
