The first-ever Movie Filmed In Space Will Star Tom Cruise

Yes, it’s happening. The world is soon going to get the first-ever movie filmed in space. And it will star none other than Mission Impossible actor Tom Cruise.

How many times have we wondered about this? Whether a film can possibly be shot in the space or not has been a curious question people have had in their minds for a long time.

And this new project is going to be the answer to all our curious questions about a movie shoot in space.

What is happening?

The first news regarding the movie was reported by Deadline which said that the Top Gun actor is working on the project with SpaceX.

NASA itself has confirmed the news about working with Tom Cruise on a movie project which will be filmed on the International Space Station.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA’s Administrator confirmed the news through a tweet.

He tweeted, “NASA is excited to work with Tom Cruise on a film aboard the Space Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”

Although it’s known that Tom Cruise will be starring in this film, we still don’t know if he himself will fly to the space station for the movie or not.

Role of SpaceX and NASA

We yet don’t know what direct role SpaceX is playing in the movie but it is providing Crew Dragon, the company’s spaceship to fly to the space station.

Crew Dragon, designed to carry up to four people, can provide enough room for a small movie crew.

The enthusiasm of the project could be perceived in a small tweet by Elon Musk. Founder and CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk tweeted, “Should be a lot of fun!”

NASA had talked last year about sending private astronauts to spend up to 30 days on the International Space Station. So this new development is definitely a step ahead from mere space tourism.

But will this really be the first-ever movie shot in space? Well if we are talking in terms of a full-length feature film, then yes. But if we are talking about a movie, then no.

Confused? Don’t be. We will give a brief sneak peek into the first-ever movie shot in the space – an eight-minute short film shot in space.

Movie in Space?

The very first movie shot in the space was called “Apogee of fear”. It is an eight-minute short science fiction movie directed by Richard Garriott in 2008.

The film was released after much protest from NASA on some vague grounds about the movie being “beyond the scope of the agreement” that Garriott had with the space agency.

Although there were some initial issues, those were resolved and finally, the movie was released. The screenplay of the short film was written by Tracy Hickman and directed by Garriott.

Some people get confused about this and claim “A beautiful planet” to be the first movie filmed in space. But there are some important differences to be considered.

While “A beautiful planet” is a full-length documentary filmed in space, “Apogee of Fear” is a short science fiction movie. And similarly, the recent movie in which Tom Cruise will be starring is a full-length science fiction feature film.

All three of these films are firsts in their own departments.

So until next time!
