Instagram Unveils “Data Download” Tool To Let You Leave

Instagram is up to building an equivalent “Download Your Information” feature so that if you want to leave the photo-sharing network, you could. This was called on by Infomance to Instagram two weeks earlier, and now Infomance could spot it rolling out to the users. You can access Instagram’s “Data Download” feature through the app’s privacy settings. Users could export their photos, videos, archived stories, info, profile, comments, and non-ephemeral messages. It could take a few hours to days for your download to be ready. According to the spokesperson of Instagram, the “Data Download” feature is currently accessible to everyone on the web, but access via Android and iOS is still rolling out. The download contains media content posted after December 2017 such as photos, videos, archived stories, and profile info. It also contains your post and story captions, your uploaded contacts, Direct messages, the usernames of your followers and people you follow, comments, searches, non-ephemeral Direct message photos and videos, and settings.

It is mandatory for Instagram to comply with the data portability rule in European Union’s GDPR privacy law which goes into effect on 25th of May. So, it is necessary for Instagram to launch this tool. Instagram is the leading image sharing social network that contains over 800 million users. Instagram should not lock up users’ data in order to keep them around.

WhatsApp with “Data Download” tool

WhatsApp made an announcement today that it too will be rolling out a “Data Download” tool to all users globally. It will be found in its next update as a part of its GDPR compliance. Users will be able to export their “account info” including group names and their profile photos. But, it does not include messages which could be backed up or exported by some phones. Also, WhatsApp is increasing the minimum age to use its app from 13 to 16 in Europe. It will stay 13 everywhere else. WhatsApp clarified that it does not share user data with Facebook. However, it does share anti-spam and security data to block bad actors on both apps. Instagram has been found copying its competitors. It copied Snapchat’s Stories in August 2016, which currently has over 300 million daily users. It received more attention than the original one. Instagram could prevent users from using hasty third-party apps to collect all their Instagram content. As it requires you to log in with your Instagram credentials, users are risked of having their images used somewhere else without their consent. It took 8 years for Instagram to become the leading photo sharing social media. It will require a miracle or a massive move to a new platform for any app to uncrown Instagram.
