Google’s Pixel Camera App Will Now Support External Microphone

According to an employee from Google Camera app’s engineering team, Google will update the app on its Pixel smartphones. Now, the app will support external microphones for shooting video.

Already, Google’s Pixel line-up phones are well-known for providing a great photography experience. But, the company is now trying to add some features by providing the support of external microphone on the camera app of the Pixel devices. Now, we are having the Pixel 3 models as well as this new change in the camera app. So, you can now professionally record a video with the default camera app by using an external microphone.

Google already developed awesome stabilization for recording video on its default camera app. But, Pixel’s microphones were able to record audio of average quality. The solution for recording a high quality video, with a great sound is by plugging external mics into the USB-C port or headphone jack.

Google Camera 6.1 and the Latest Update

As a member from the company’s Pixel Camera engineering team has confirmed the update, you can find the same in a forum post on the Pixel User Community. Recently, a new Google Camera update was launched with an option to enable or disable external microphones on Pixel devices. The latest Google Camera 6.1 update is currently available on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL devices. But, other Pixel users can also update their camera apps by downloading the APK file of the latest update.

There were many queries around the external microphone support. So, a member from the Pixel Camera engineering team, with username IsaacOnCamera made everything clear with a post on Google’s forums. According to his post, the support for the external microphones in the default camera app for all Pixel devices will be launched along with the Pixel 3 on 18th October. Also, the response suggests that apart from the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, the new update will come to the previous Pixel models.

With the support of external microphones, Pixel devices will be able to capture videos like a pro. The latest Pixel models support 1080p (full-HD) video recording at 30fps, 60fps, and 120fps. Also, it allows recording 4k videos at 30fps and super slow motion clips at 240fps at 720p (HD) resolution. The Pixel 3 supports up to 1080p (full-HD) video recording at 30fps with its front camera. For making videos better, the app has optical and electronic image stabilization. Also, there’s a f/1.8 lens at the back with a Display Field of View (DFoV) of about 76 degrees.

Notably, some third-party camera apps like Open Camera already supports external mics for recording audio. But, the Pixel is going with video update. So, people using Pixel as a content creation tool such as vloggers and other YouTubers could now create videos like a pro. The update will roll out along with the launch of the Pixel 3 on 18th October.
