Google Introducing “Highly cited” label to direct users to original news sources

Google has introduced a new “High-citation” label in its search results to direct users to the trusted results, the company announced on 31st March.

The new label will appear on the high stories carousel for helping users to identify the frequently cited stories by other news sources. These features will be launched initially on cellular in the USA and further, it will roll out globally.

This label will be available for investigation articles, interviews, announcements, press releases, and local news stories also.

“Let’s say a local news organization breaks an investigative story looking into problems at your local school district,” Google said in a blog post. “The story is so big that it gets picked up by numerous other media outlets.”

“But what if you didn’t see that original story, which had a unique context for local residents? We’re introducing a way to help you identify stories that have been frequently cited by other news organizations, giving you a simple way to find the most helpful or relevant information for a news story.”

Google also announced that it’s also exploring its rapidly evolving topics notice which appears as breaking news in search results to indicate whether there is information yet to be published. From 31st March, all searches in English in the USA will help users to evaluate information and whether it is from a trusted source or not.

Lastly, Google said that they are also improving their AI model for giving users a safer experience and better handling of sensitive queries, including topics like suicide, sexual assault, abusive substance, and domestic violence. It’s also working in AI technologies to remove explicit or suggestive content from search engines for a better customer experience.
