Google becomes the first customer to pay Wikimedia to access its content

  • Google has agreed to fund the non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, thus becoming its first-ever customer.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation had recently launched the Wikimedia Enterprise as an opt-in product.
  • Companies can sign up for a free 30-day trial account from the Wikimedia Foundation.

Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit corporation with its main office in San Francisco, California, and is officially recognized by US law as a charitable foundation. It is the owner of the Wikimedia projects, which are created and maintained by thousands of unpaid volunteers including Wikipedians, as well as the MediaWiki wiki software. Naturally enough, it is also the charity that is in charge of running Wikipedia.

The Wikimedia Enterprise was recently introduced by the Wikimedia Foundation as an opt-in product. To better understand their requirements with the software, prospective customers can self-register for a free trial account that the firm will give.

Following this, for utilizing Wikipedia’s information on its search engine, Google has agreed to compensate the Wikimedia Foundation. Google and the nonprofit digital repository Internet Archive were named as Wikimedia’s foremost Wikimedia Enterprise customers. Notably, Google has become Wikipedia’s first-ever client to buy its commercial service.

According to a blog post by Lane Becker, Senior Director of Earned Revenue at the Wikimedia Foundation, “Wikimedia Enterprise is designed to meet a variety of content reuse and sourcing needs, and our first two customers are a key example of this. Google and the Internet Archive leverage Wikimedia content in very distinct ways, whether it’s to help power a portion of knowledge panel results or preserve citations on Wikipedia”.

According to Wikimedia, organizations and businesses of all sizes can use Wikimedia Enterprise products with dedicated customer support and Service Level Agreements for a variable charge based on their usage. Companies interested in using Wikimedia Enterprise services can register for a free trial account on the website, which enables 10,000 on-demand requests and unrestricted access to a 30-day Snapshot.

Google sources its material from Wikimedia, increasing the number of its search results. Furthermore, it uses Wikipedia as a source of the information displayed in its knowledge panel. Tim Palmer, Managing Director, Search Partnerships at Google, thinks the new collaboration with Wikimedia will improve the effectiveness of the content sourcing process.
