Cloudflare launches Spectrum that will protect almost everything connected to the Internet

Cloudflare is well-known for protecting websites against malicious floods of traffic. Since eight years, it has made its name in protecting websites. When Cloudflare was launched back in 2010, it worked on providing faster connections to the websites and protecting websites from hackers. But now, it is taking a huge step to move beyond the web and protecting other parts of the Internet. So now, the company will be providing protection against other services connected to the Internet, apart from DDoS safeguards. It will include protection against almost all the services such as – email servers, games, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Spectrum works in the way similar to the mainstream Cloudflare product. The company’s globally-distributed data centers proxies Internet traffic, and this way it protects other services connected to the Internet.

How does Spectrum work?

In order to offer the fastest speed to the users on the Internet, Cloudflare’s software automatically passes users through the most geographically-close data center. In order to protect the websites, the traffic which seems to be malicious is automatically discarded by the software, similar to what you see with a DDoS attack. Spectrum works beyond protecting websites. It works with almost everything connected to the Internet. It extends Cloudflare to 65,533 ports. There was a need for such tool. The number of DDoS attacks have increased a lot in size and potency in the recent years. It was worth noting that some DDoS attacks seemed completely non-traditional. In 2016, Pokemon Go was struck by a DDoS attack as soon as it was launched. It caused the gameplay to halt for millions of users. Also, attackers targeted Dyn, which is a major provider of DNS services. It caused a huge disruptment on the Internet.

Cloudflare aims to provide Spectrum for extending security of some well-known old software products along with faster connections. If some old piece of software does not support encryption through the route, Spectrum will protect it automatically. Also, it does not require any compatibility with any website or software. According to Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, Cloudflare has been working for the betterment of security and user-experience over the Internet. Since long, Cloudflare has been working world-wide over this. Spectrum supports protocols beyond the web, and is a huge step in building a better Internet. Spectrum will be available only to the company’s larger enterprise clients at first. It is available to the enterprises that want to sign up for the service. The pricing plans are not listed for the service, but it will charge the clients on the basis of traffic routed through the service.
