Apple: iOS 12 Will Automatically Share Your Location

During the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple came up with its new iOs 12 for Apple devices. A lot of interesting features were introduced in the new version. Apple introduced a health kit, improved battery performance, AI Kit and so on. But, one notable feature is that Apple improved the 911 emergency. In a survey, it was found that 80% of people in the United States use their mobile during an emergency. They dial 911 from the mobile but due to outdated feature, the process is delayed. The person who first responds to the 911 call get the details from the user personally. But, Apple has improved the situation. Now, when a person calls on a 911, its accurate location is shared immediately with the first responder. The main purpose of this feature is simple – reducing the emergency response time.

Before Apple, Google and Uber came up with a similar feature. This feature can be life changing at times of emergency. Apple shares these data with the 911 centers securely. It will use RapidSOS’s quicker, an internet-based technology. It says that most of the 911 centers will be facilitated with these features. It will send the location as accurate as 165 feet nearly 80% of the time.

Deployment Of The Feature

Apple’s latest feature is built on Hybridized Emergency Location (HELO) system which was launched in 2015. It says that the existing feature of 911 centers will be upgraded to facilitate the data. The upgrade will be done with the help of companies like RapidSOS. The use of such companies will accelerate the process of deploying the services of new 911 easily and quickly. Rob McMullen, President of National Emergency Number Association has said that “Apple’s plan will help in saving lives and protect properties”.

Apple has always cared about the safety. Recently, Tim Cook responded with “I don’t know, we will never face that” when was questioned if a data scandal happens with Apple just like Facebook. They have made privacy their first priority and hence protects their user data preciously. Apple said that the data will be used only for emergency purposes. It cannot be used for non-emergency situations.

Apple has already been sharing a near accurate location using WiFi, cell networks, and GPS. But, with the HELO feature, it can reduce the margin of error greatly. This will increase the accuracy in cities with a dense population as it becomes quite hard to determine the location exactly.

The increased accuracy will only help in the emergency services arriving quickly. It will help the person get emergency help even when they are not in a situation to convey their current location. This feature will surely increase the medical help which people avail through the 911 service.

Apple has been working quite a lot on iOS 12 and it is evident. iOS 12 is set to feature sometime in fall and this feature will be a great on to the existing OS.
