TRAI To Host Discussions on OTT App Regulation

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced plans to conduct open house discussions within the next three months to develop a regulatory framework for over-the-top (OTT) communication services that are currently not covered under the Telecom Act.

Despite the recent passage of the Telecom Act, TRAI Chairman P.D. Vaghela clarified that the ongoing consultation on regulating OTT communication services will continue.

In a statement, TRAI emphasised the necessity of addressing the regulatory challenges posed by OTT communication services, which have significantly increased in popularity but operate outside the traditional telecom regulatory framework. The planned open house discussions aim to gather input from various stakeholders, including industry representatives, consumer groups, and policymakers, to formulate comprehensive regulations.

Additionally, TRAI is set to release a consultation paper next month focusing on unsolicited commercial communications. This move is part of a broader effort to tighten regulations and curb the misuse of such communications, which have become a growing concern for consumers. The consultation paper will explore various measures to enhance consumer protection and ensure compliance with existing laws.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs is also reportedly working on initiatives to tackle unsolicited commercial communications, signalling a coordinated effort across government bodies to address this pervasive issue.

The regulatory push comes at a time when the digital communication landscape is rapidly evolving, necessitating updated frameworks to ensure fair play, consumer protection, and industry growth. The outcomes of these discussions and consultations are expected to shape the future of OTT communication service regulation in India.
