BharatPe and PhonePe Settle Trademark Dispute Over ‘Pe’ Suffix

Fintech giants BharatPe and PhonePe have amicably resolved their long-standing legal battles concerning the usage of the ‘Pe’ suffix in their trademarks. This settlement, announced jointly by both companies today, concludes a five-year dispute that had spanned multiple courts.

As part of the agreement, PhonePe and BharatPe have initiated the withdrawal of all trademark oppositions against each other, facilitating the registration of their respective marks. Additionally, both companies will comply with the settlement’s requirements in the ongoing cases before the Delhi High Court and Bombay High Court.

“This is a positive development for the industry. I appreciate the maturity and professionalism shown by the management of both sides, working closely to resolve all outstanding legal issues,” commented Rajnish Kumar, Chairman of the Board at BharatPe.

Sameer Nigam, Founder and CEO of PhonePe, added, “This outcome will benefit both companies, allowing us to move forward and focus our collective energy on growing the Indian fintech industry as a whole.”

The conflict began in 2019 when PhonePe accused BharatPe of unauthorized usage of the ‘Pe’ suffix in its app, seeking a legal injunction. Similarly, insurtech startup BimaPe, which later rebranded as Verak, faced legal challenges from PhonePe over the same issue.

The Indian startup ecosystem has witnessed several out-of-court settlements in the past, including notable cases such as PhonePe versus Indus OS, Khatabook versus Dukaan, versus Book Your Game, and Flipkart versus GOQii.

This resolution marks a significant milestone, highlighting the ability of major players in the fintech sector to resolve disputes amicably, paving the way for future growth and collaboration.
