Shopsy Welcomes New CEO Amid Strategic Reorganization

Flipkart‘s social commerce platform, Shopsy, has appointed Prathyusha Agarwal as its new CEO. Agarwal, who has held significant roles at Byju’s and Unilever, brings over 20 years of experience to Shopsy.

An alumna of IIM Ahmedabad, her career includes positions at Zee Entertainment as Chief Consumer and Data Officer, Tata Cliq, Star India, and Unilever. She most recently served as Chief Business Officer at Byju’s, leaving in October 2023.

Launched by Flipkart in 2021, Shopsy focuses on products priced at Rs 300 or less, with fashion as its primary category.

The platform’s main competitor, Meesho, has seen substantial growth, particularly in smaller markets, recording 38 million transacting users in the quarter ending September 2023—a 10% year-on-year increase. Meesho has also claimed profitability with a $7 million quarterly profit, prompting increased competition from Amazon‘s Bazaar and Reliance’s Ajio Street.

Agarwal’s appointment is part of a wider reorganization at Flipkart, which has seen several long-time executives leave. Shopsy was previously led by Prakash Sikaria, Flipkart’s SVP of Growth & Monetization, until July 2022 when he left to launch the fintech startup Super.Money, which Flipkart backed with a $20 million investment.

Following Sikaria, Adarsh Menon, who served as Senior Vice President and Head of New Businesses, took over leadership at Shopsy but left last year to join Zoomcar as Global President.

The reorganization extends beyond Shopsy, Flipkart recently appointed former Swiggy executive Anuj Rathi as CEO of its travel platform Cleartrip. These changes reflect Flipkart’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its leadership and adapt to evolving market dynamics.

Agarwal’s diverse background and extensive experience in consumer-focused roles are expected to drive Shopsy’s growth and enhance its competitive position in the burgeoning social commerce sector. Her leadership is anticipated to bring new strategic insights, further solidifying Shopsy’s market presence.
