Most of the phones today have the lithium-ion batteries that are incredibly popular. These are some of the most energetic rechargeable batteries available and they have some great advantages.

Lithium-ion batteries have been in news due to some infamous incidents where these batteries blasted. Although such cases have been rare, they still caught widespread attention.

And despite these accidents, they are still popularly used. Why?

For one, theses are very light-weight batteries which in turn makes the phones light-weighted. People are more likely to buy those batteries that are lighter in weight.

Not just that, they can also hold their charge better than the NiMH batteries. They are likely to lose only five percent charge per month while NiMH batteries are likely to lose about 20 percent.

And they are more feasible with the charge/discharge cycle. That is to say, you don’t have to discharge it all the way down to the zero before charging it completely again. You can charge it whenever you want even if it already has enough charge left in it.

But there’s a catch…

Lithium-ion batteries start degrading as soon as they are out of the factories. No matter whether you are using them or not, they won’t last more than 2-3 years from the date of manufacturing.

They are extremely sensitive to high temperatures. The already degrading batteries degrade even faster in the presence of heat.

And you must not let it discharge completely or else it is ruined.

And, perhaps the most lethal disadvantage of lithium-ion batteries is the reason they are so infamous. If the lithium-ion battery pack fails, it will burst into flames.

So how to take care of your battery?

That is the most natural question that comes after the list of disadvantages mentioned above. You need to make sure that your phone’s battery lasts longer.

The very first step is to make sure that your battery stays at room temperature. Don’t leave your phone out in heat car or direct sunlight for too long.

Avoid discharging your lithium ion battery fully. It is with the partial discharge that the battery lives longer and healthier. But again there’s one exception.

After 30 charges, you can allow your battery to almost fully discharge. And do not recharge a deeply discharged lithium ion battery if they have been discharged that way for over months.

So that is all for now. Lithium-ion batteries are a great improvement for us. Just follow some basic tips and you’ll stay safe and so will your battery. Until next time, bye!
