The increase in global temperature will continue to increase next year as well. This trend will have a serious impact on human lives. The temperature rise will increase one degree above the pre-industrial level.
As per Met report, 2020 will see an increase of 1.11C in temperature which is more than the average between 1850 to 1900.
2020 will be another warmest year. It’s 6 in a row, 2014 to 2019. Scientists and climate experts strongly believe that emission of greenhouse gas which is increasing at an alarming rate.
In 2015, the temperature increased one degree above pre-industrial levels. After that mark, every year there is an increase in global temperature.
Climate Change: El Nino 2016
There is an increase in sea surface temperature in the central and Pacific regions. Though the chance of El Nino happening again in 2020 is very low, we can’t rule out the fact the climate is changing.
The emission of C02 and other greenhouse gases are increasing the global average temperature. This increase is creating chaos in weather patterns. So many people are getting affected by unforeseen weather events like heatwaves, floods, storms, etc.
Scientists and their predictions
As per forecasts, the global average temperature will be from 0.99C to 1.23C by next year.
“Natural events like El Nino strongly influences the climate system, In the absence of El Nino, there are still adverse weather events occurring frequently all over the world. That’s due to global warming caused by human beings who are instrumental in the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,” said Prof. Adam Scaife, Head of Long-range Prediction in the Met Office.
Though coal usage has decreased this year, CO2 emissions have not decreased. On the contrary, there is a significant increase in global warming gases this year.
Increase in CO2 Emissions
According to the Global Carbon Project’s analysis, the emission of CO2 will increase by 0.6% in 2019. The use of oil and gas is the predominant reason for this intimidating rise.
More the emissions, more the temperature, it gets warmer. Scientists say if this trend continues our planet will be in peril. 2015-2019 will be the warmest five-year period if we keep on emitting greenhouses gases.
The predictions are made based on previous years data. Last, the estimate was 1.10C above 1850-1900. By October itself, we breached that mark.
Since 2015, every year the temperature is 1.0C warmer than the pre-industrial temperature.
The threshold is 1.5C and scientists are extremely concerned with the increasing trend continuing since 2014. If that limit of 1.5C is breached, there will be dangerous impacts on Earth.
Countries should start planning things ahead with 1.5C mark in their mind. Next November, countries are gathering for a summit to discuss keeping the emissions as low as possible. Climate change is happening and we have to press the panic button now.
